The Rookery is ideally located just on the fringe of the Square Mile, London’s financial district. It is near the Bank of England, St. Paul’s Cathedral, the Old Bailey and the historic Inns of Court.
From the Middle Ages Smithfield, just outside the ancient walls of the City of London, was a bustling cattle market. It was surrounded by monastic institutions until they were all dissolved by King Henry VIII. Over the next 400 years the City Guilds became all powerful within the Square Mile, but outside it no constraints existed and the market thrived. This prosperity, combined with a convenient lack of law enforcement, attracted all manner of villains including, reputedly, Charles Dickens’s immortal rascal, Fagin. The area became known colloquially as The Rookery.
